UK announces stricter visa measures
LONDON, Dec 05: Britain announced plans to slash the number of migrants arriving by legal routes on Monday, raising the minimum salary they must earn in a skilled job by a third, amid pressure on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to tackle record net migration figures. High levels of legal migration have dominated Britain's political landscape for more than a decade and were a key factor in the 2016 vote to leave the European Union. —Reuters
Magnitude 5.7 quake shakes Manila
MANILA, Dec 05: A magnitude 5.7 earthquake shook the Philippine capital Manila on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said, sending people rushing out of buildings and briefly halting train services in the city. The strong quake struck off the country's main island of Luzon at 4:23 pm (0823 GMT) at a depth of 77 kilometres (48 miles), about 94 kilometres southwest of Manila, the USGS said. Videos shared on social media showed commuters sitting squashed together on a train platform and people in the Senate exiting the building after the tremor stopped. —AFP
Nigeria army drone kills 85 civilians
LAGOS, Dec 05: A Nigerian army drone strike accidently killed at least 85 civilians on Sunday in a village in the country's northwest Kaduna State, the state-run emergency agency said in a statement. "The Northwest Zonal Office has received details from the local authorities that 85 dead bodies have so far been buried while search is still ongoing," National Emergency Management Agency said on its Facebook page. A spokesman on Tuesday confirmed the statement. The army on Monday said one of its drone strikes had mistakenly hit the villagers as they were celebrating a Muslim festival. —AFP
