Australia to send military personnel to help

protect Red Sea shipping but no warship

CANBERRA, Dec 21: Australia will send 11 military personnel to support a U.S.-led mission to protect cargo shipping in the Red Sea, but it won't send a warship or plane, the defense minister said Thursday. Defense Minister Richard Marles said that Australia's military needs to keep focused on the Pacific region. The United States announced this week that several nations are creating a force to protect commercial shipping from attacks by drones and ballistic missiles fired from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen. — AP

12 dead in China coal mine accident

SHANGHAI, Dec 21: Twelve people have been killed and 13 others injured in a mining accident in northeast China, state media reported on Thursday. The incident took place at 3:50 pm local time (0750 GMT) on Wednesday at a coal mine on the outskirts of Jixi city in Heilongjiang province, state broadcaster CCTV said. The accident-which involved a vehicle in the mine's inclined shaft-"caused 12 deaths and injured 13, and the injured have all been sent to hospital for treatment", CCTV said on Thursday. "The cause of the accident is still under investigation," CCTV said. Mining safety in China has improved in recent decades, as has media coverage of major incidents, many of which were once overlooked. — AFP

Russia attacks Ukraine with 35 drones

KYIV, Dec 21: Ukraine said Thursday that air defence systems in the capital Kyiv and other locations across the country had downed dozens of Iranian-designed drones launched by Russian forces in Moscow's latest overnight barrage. "Russian occupiers attacked with 'Shahed' type UAVs from three directions: Chauda - occupied Crimea, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Kursk," the Ukranian air force wrote on Telegram. It said it shot down 34 of the 35 drones, without reporting any casualties. — AFP
