Huthis fire missiles at US warship

SANAA, Jan 31: Yemen's Huthi rebels fired "several" missiles at a US warship in the Red Sea, they said on Wednesday, hours after the US military reported shooting down a missile. "The naval forces of the Yemeni Armed Forces, with the help of God Almighty, fired several... naval missiles at the American destroyer USS Gravely in the Red Sea," the Huthi statement said. — AFP

Popular Thai party could be dissolved

BANGKOK, Jan 31: The Thai pro-democracy party which won the most votes at last year's election could now be forced to dissolve after a court ruled its key policy illegal. Move Forward is not in government but its promises to campaign on changing royal defamation laws violated the constitution, a Thai court has found. Such lese majeste laws have increasingly been used to stifle political criticism, activists say. — BBC

US F-16 fighter jet crashes off S Korea

SEOUL, Jan 31: An American F-16 fighter jet crashed in waters off South Korea's west coast Wednesday morning, the Yonhap news agency reported, with the pilot rescued after ejecting from the aircraft. "The fighter jet crashed into the water and the rescued pilot is safe," Yonhap reported, adding the accident happening near Gunsan, North Jeolla province. — AFP

NZ to ban harmful chemicals in make-up

WELLINGTON, Jan 31: New Zealand is set to become one of the first countries to ban harmful "forever chemicals" from cosmetic products, environment watchdogs said Wednesday. The Environmental Protection Authority said it will ban long-lasting substances perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl-known as PFAS or "forever chemicals"-by 2027. Found in items like nail polish, shaving cream, foundation, lipstick and mascara, PFAS make products more durable, spreadable and water-resistant. — AFP

Russia sees NATO as threat, says Kremlin

MOSCOW, Jan 31: Russia views NATO as a "threat" and is taking measures to deal with it, the Kremlin said on Wednesday when asked about the alliance's large-scale military drills. Some 90,000 troops will take part in the NATO military alliance's Steadfast Defender 24 exercise, the biggest since the 1988 Reforger drill during the Cold War. "Of course it is a threat to us, that is how we treat it, and we are constantly taking appropriate measures to deal with it," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. — AFP

About 8.0m displaced by Sudan war: UN

ADDIS ABABA, Jan 31: The number of people uprooted by the war between rival generals in Sudan is almost eight million, the United Nations said Wednesday. UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, who is on a visit to Ethiopia, called for "urgent and additional support to meet their needs", his agency said in a statement disclosing the numbers. — AFP
