Russia's deputy FM visits Seoul after diplomatic

row over North Korea comments

SEOUL, Feb 04: Russia's deputy foreign minister Andrey Rudenko visited South Korea to discuss the Ukrainian war and bilateral ties, Seoul's foreign ministry said Sunday, as the two countries trade increasingly heated rhetoric over the nuclear-armed North. Rudenko, Russia's deputy foreign minister handling Asia-Pacific affairs, met his South Korean counterpart Chung Byung-won on Friday, Seoul's foreign ministry said in a statement. Chung expressed Seoul's "grave position" on Moscow's growing military cooperation with Pyongyang and urged Russia to take "responsible actions", the statement said. — AFP

Chile forest fires toll hits 51

VIÑA DEL, Feb 04: Intense forest fires burning around a densely populated area of central Chile have caused at least 46 deaths, Chile's pesident said Saturday evening, and officials said at least 1,100 homes had been destroyed. In a nationally televised address, President Gabriel Boric warned that the death toll could worsen as four large fires burn in the region of Valparaiso, where firefighters have struggled to reach the most threatened neighborhoods. — AP

Two pilots die in Turkey helicopter crash

ANKARA, Feb 04: Two Turkish pilots were killed, and one technician was injured in a helicopter crash in the southeastern Gaziantep province, Turkiye's Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said Sunday. The chopper, registered in the inventory of the General Directorate of Security Aviation Department, crashed in the Kartal village of the Nurdagi district, Yerlikaya said on social media platform X. The helicopter departed from the southern Hatay province and was last contacted at 10:49 p.m. local time late Saturday (1949 GMT), he said. Many gendarmerie, fire brigade and medical teams were dispatched to the scene. — Xinhua

Namibian President dies in hospital

CAIRO, Feb 04: Namibian President Hage Geingob died Sunday while receiving medical treatment, his office announced. In a post on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, the Namibian presidency said Geingob's medical team at Lady Pohamba Hospital did its best to help him, but Geingob died with his wife, Monica Geingos, and children by his side. Geingob was undergoing treatment for cancer. — AP
