Five Kurdish-led fighters killed in drone

attack on US base in Syria

BEIRUT, Feb 05: Five fighters from the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces were killed in an overnight attack on an American base in eastern Syria, a war monitor said Monday. "Five members from SDF special forces were killed and around 20 wounded by a drone attack after midnight on Al-Omar oil field," the largest US-led coalition base in Syria, said Rami Abdel Rahman, the head of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a loose alliance of pro-Iran fighters opposed to US support for Israel in Gaza, claimed a drone attack on Sunday "against the US occupation base in the Al-Omar oil field". — AFP

Monet wins Grammy for Best New Artist

LOS ANGELES, Feb 05: Victoria Monet on Sunday won the coveted Best New Artist Grammy, beating an eclectic field including Bronx rapper Ice Spice to earn the honor. Monet entered the night with seven nominations including one for the prestigious Record of the Year award, after her debut studio album "Jaguar II" sparked a commercial breakthrough following years in the industry. Her Best New Artist prize brings her total win count on the night to three. The others were best R&B album and best engineered album, non-classical. "Thank you to the champagne servers of tonight. That's my first thank you," Monet told the audience. —AFP

Sudanese clashes leave 19 dead

JUBA, Feb 05: Nineteen people, one of them a humanitarian worker, were killed in ethnic clashes over the weekend in the Abyei region straddling the border between Sudan and South Sudan and claimed by both, local authorities said. Violence between the two countries is common in the oil-rich territory, with 54 people killed last week alone, including two UN peacekeepers. Another 64 people were injured in fighting last week between two tribes of the main ethnic Dinka-the Abyei-based Ngok and their Twic rivals from the neighbouring southern state of Warrap. — AFP
