High-ranking Indian election official
resigns ahead of polls
NEW DELHI, Mar 10: India's second-highest ranked election commission official has resigned, the justice ministry said, days before the expected announcement of general elections in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi will seek a third term. Arun Goel resigned Saturday, leaving the Election Commission of India with only one of its three top officials to conduct what will be the largest exercise of the democratic franchise in human history. Nearly a billion people are eligible to cast ballots in the elections, likely to be held in April-May. — AFP
Man arrested for crashing car into
Buckingham Palace gates
LONDON, Mar 10: Officers arrested a man who crashed a car into the gates of London's Buckingham Palace over the weekend, police said on Sunday. The Metropolitan Police said the car "collided with the gates" of the royal residence at 02:30 GMT on Saturday. Armed officers arrested the man at the scene on suspicion of criminal damage and he was taken to hospital, a spokesperson for the force said. — AFP
Pope calls for peace in Haiti
VATICAN CITY, Mar 10: Pope Francis on Sunday offered his prayers for Haiti, where criminal gangs have unleashed havoc in recent days. "I am following with concern and pain the serious crisis affecting Haiti and the violent episodes that have occurred in recent days," the 87-year-old said after his Sunday Angelus prayer. —AFP
