Five dead in Russian strikes on Kharkiv
KYIV, Apr 04: Five people were killed following Russian strikes on Ukraine's eastern city of Kharkiv on Wednesday night, officials said. Four people, including three rescue workers, were killed and five were injured in strikes on a residential buildings that had previously been bombed in a "densely populated district of Kharkiv", mayor Igor Terekhov wrote on Telegram. A strike in another "residential area" also killed a fifth person, he said. — AFP
People jump into sea to escape raging ferry fire
BANGKOK, Apr 04: Panicked passengers jumped into the sea to escape a raging ferry fire in the Gulf of Thailand early Thursday, and all 108 people on board were safe. The overnight ferry from Surat Thani province was about to arrive at Koh Tao, a popular tourist destination off the Thai coast, when one of the passengers suddenly heard a crackling sound and smelled smoke. Maitree Promjampa said he saw billowing smoke and fire less than five minutes later, and that was when people started shouting and rang the alarm. — AP
Trump loses bid to delay hush money trial
NEW YORK, Apr 04: A New York judge on Wednesday denied Donald Trump's bid to delay his April 15 trial on charges stemming from hush money paid to a porn star until the US Supreme Court reviews claim to presidential immunity in a separate criminal case. The Court is scheduled to hear the former US President's arguments that he is immune from federal prosecution for trying to overturn his 2020 election defeat to Democratic President Joe Biden on April 25.—Reuters
Magnitude-6.0 quake shakes northeast Japan
TOKYO, Apr 04: A magnitude-6.0 earthquake struck off northeastern Japan's Fukushima region on Thursday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, but no tsunami warning was issued. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries after the earthquake, whose epicentre had a depth of 40 kilometres (25 miles) and which was also felt in Tokyo. — AFP
Diabetes drug shows promise against Parkinson's
WASHINGTON, Apr 04: A drug used to treat diabetes slowed the progression of motor issues associated with Parkinson's disease, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine said Wednesday. Parkinson's is a devastating nervous system disorder affecting 10 million people worldwide, with no current cure. — AFP
