Japan PM to visit France, Brazil, Paraguay

TOKYO, Apr 26: Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will visit France, Brazil and Paraguay next week as his nation seeks to boost ties with Latin America. The six-day itinerary will see Kishida meet French President Emmanuel Macron as well as Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the Japanese prime minister's office said. "This year, Brazil is chairing the G20 and Peru is chairing APEC. This is the year of Latin America, and it is the focus of the world's attention", government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi told a regular briefing. "Japan would like to seize this opportunity to strengthen ties with Latin American countries," he said. — AFP

155 killed in Tanzania as heavy rains lash East Africa

DAR ES SALAAM, Apr 26: At least 155 people have died in Tanzania as torrential rains linked to El Nino triggered flooding and landslides, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa said on Thursday. Tanzania and other countries in East Africa - a region highly vulnerable to climate change - have been pounded by heavier than usual rainfall during the current rainy season, with dozens of deaths also reported in Kenya. Majaliwa said the rains have affected more than 51,000 households and 200,000 people, with 155 fatalities and 236 injuries. — Arab News

Ukrainian minister detained over suspected corruption

KYIV, Apr 26: Ukraine's Agriculture Minister Mykola Solsky was detained after being named a formal suspect in a multimillion-dollar corruption inquiry, prosecutors said Friday. Solsky was accused of illegally seizing land worth more than $7 million when he was the head of a major farming company and a member of parliament. An anti-corruption court ordered him to be held in custody until June 24, prosecutors said. — AFP

Storm damages hundreds of

houses in northern Laos

VIENTIANE, Apr 26: A storm passed through northern Laos' Xayaboury province, bringing strong winds, heavy rain and hail, and left a trail of destruction in 20 villages, with 520 houses affected. The storm hit the province on Tuesday at around 4:00 p.m. local time, causing damage to seven schools, the provincial hospital, a market, and five temples, as well as army, health, judicial, education, and transport offices. In addition, nine electricity poles and 22 kV power lines were damaged, as well as a chicken farm and seven vehicles, the local news website Lao Pattana News reported on Friday. — Xinhua

Burkina Faso suspends BBC, VoA

for reporting on army killings

Burkina Faso, Apr 26: Burkina Faso has suspended the BBC and Voice of America (VoA) radio networks from broadcasting for two weeks over their coverage of a report accusing the army of the extrajudicial killings of civilians, the authorities said. In a new report published on Thursday, international organisation Human Rights Watch (HRW) said military forces "summarily executed" 223 civilians, including at least 56 children, in two villages in February. — Al Jazeera
