Russia announces nuclear weapon drills after

angry exchange with Western officials

MOSCOW, May 06: Russia plans to hold drills simulating the use of tactical nuclear weapons, the Defense Ministry announced Monday, days after the Kremlin reacted angrily to comments by senior Western officials about the war in Ukraine. The drills are in response to "provocative statements and threats of certain Western officials regarding the Russian Federation," the Defense Ministry said in a statement. It was the first time that Russia has publicly announced drills involving tactical nuclear weapons, though its strategic nuclear forces regularly hold exercises. — AP

UN nuclear watchdog chief travels to Iran

JERUSALEM, May 06: The head of the United Nations' atomic watchdog will travel Monday to Iran, where his agency faces increasing difficulty in monitoring the Islamic Republic's rapidly advancing nuclear program as tensions remain high in the wider Middle East over the Israel-Hamas war. Rafael Mariano Grossi already has warned Tehran has enough uranium enriched to near-weapons-grade levels to make "several" nuclear bombs if it chose to do so. He has acknowledged the agency can't guarantee that none of Iran's centrifuges may have been peeled away for clandestine enrichment. — AP

Cyber attack: Germany recalls Russia envoy

BERLIN, May 06: Germany has temporarily recalled its Russian ambassador after members of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's party were targeted in what Berlin said was a state-sponsored Russian cyberattack, the foreign ministry said Monday. A newly concluded government investigation found the cyberattack targeting members of Scholz's Social Democratic Party had been carried out by a group known as APT28, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said last week. The group was controlled by Russia's military intelligence, meaning it was "a state-sponsored Russian cyberattack on Germany," Baerbock added. Russia rejected the allegations as "unsubstantiated and groundless". — AFP

Kenya flood death toll hits 228

NAIROBI, May 06: The death toll from floods in Kenya has risen to 228 people, the country's Interior Ministry said. Earlier, 179 deaths were reported. The floods also affected the Masai Mara Safari Park in western Kenya, where groups of tourists in hotels were cut off by the overflowing Telek River. Earlier in the day, a landslide killed 46 people near the village of Mai Mahiu in the central part of the country. According to a statement issued by the ministry, the situation is expected to worsen in lowland and coastal areas, and landslides and mudslides may also occur in areas with steep slopes and ravines. — TASS

Bolsonaro hospitalised for skin infection

RIO DE JANEIRO, May 06: Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro said Sunday he had been hospitalized for a skin infection. "I have been admitted to the Santa Julia Hospital in Manaus," the right-wing ex-leader posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. "I have erysipelas," the 69-year-old said, offering "a hug to everyone." Erysipelas is a bacterial skin infection which can cause pain and fever. Bolsonaro had spent the weekend in the northern Amazonas city of Manaus, campaigning for Alberto Neto, the Liberal Party candidate for the October mayoral election. — AFP
