Death toll from India tainted liquor tragedy rises to 47

NEW DELHI, June 21: The death toll from the latest case of tainted liquor in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu has climbed to 47, with over 100 people still in hospital, a government official said on Friday. Since Wednesday more than 150 people, suffering from vomiting, stomach aches and diarrhoea, have needed treatment after drinking methanol-mixed liquor made in the Kallakurichi district, about 250 km (150 miles) from the state capital Chennai. — Reuters

5 dead, dozens hurt in Turkey wildfire

KÖKSALAN (Turkey), June 21: Five people died and dozens were hurt when a huge wildfire swept through several villages in mainly Kurdish southeastern Turkey overnight, the health minister said on Friday. Hundreds of animals also perished in the blaze, local residents said. An AFP correspondent saw many of their bodies lying on the ground. Dramatic overnight images on social media showed flames raging over a large area, lighting up the night sky. — AFP

Death toll in China flooding rises to 38

BEIJING, June 21: The death toll from heavy rains and flooding in southern China's Guangdong province this week rose to 38 on Friday, state media reported. "Due to the severity of the disaster... the search and rescue of trapped people is difficult and time-consuming," state broadcaster CCTV reported. "As of 15:00 on June 21, the disaster caused 38 deaths with two people missing." — AFP

Russia jails teacher for 20 years

MOSCOW, June 21: A Russian military court has jailed a teacher for 20 years on "high treason" charges for sending money to Ukraine, with the defendant saying colleagues reported him to authorities. Russia has unleashed a mass crackdown on dissent or alleged support for Ukraine since launching the military campaign against its pro-Western neighbour in February 2022. — AFP
