KYIV, Aug 30: A Russian attack overnight damaged a factory in Ukraine's northern city of Sumy, killed two women and injured at least 11 people, Ukrainian authorities said on Friday. Ukraine's Prosecutor General's office said the factory manufactured packaging for baby food, juices and household products. One injured person died later in hospital, regional prosecutors said on Telegram, and the body of another victim was retrieved from the rubble. The airstrike caused a fire, prompting authorities to tell residents to stay inside and close windows because of air pollution. — Reuters
Pakistan military launches strikes in response to Balochistan attacks
ISLAMABAD, Aug 30: Pakistan's military has launched intelligence-based operations in the southwestern Balochistan province in response to attacks by insurgents that killed over 50 people this week, the army said on Friday. In a statement, the army said five insurgents were killed and three others wounded in the three operations it had launched in the province. "Operations will continue until all perpetrators, facilitators and abetters of these atrocious acts are brought to justice," the statement said. — Reuters
US man executed for killing
college student
STARKE, Aug 30: A Florida man convicted of killing a college freshman and raping the murder victim's older sister while the siblings camped in a national forest 30 years ago was executed Thursday. Loran Cole, 57, received a lethal injection and was pronounced dead at 6:15 p.m. at Florida State Prison for the 1994 killing of the 18-year-old student. Cole also was serving two life sentences for rape. — AP
14 killed as bus, truck collide in Mali
DAKAR, Aug 30: At least 14 people were killed and 29 injured when a bus and truck collided Thursday in Mali, the transport ministry said. The accident happened around 6:00 am (0600 GMT) on a major road near the town of Fana, east of the capital Bamako, according to the ministry. The bus had been leaving Fana for Bamako, while the truck was headed in the opposite direction, the ministry said without further details. — AFP
