Brazil expresses outrage after dozens of
deportees arrive handcuffed from US
SAO PAULO, Jan 26: Brazil's government expressed outrage on Saturday after dozens of immigrants deported from the United States arrived by plane in handcuffs, calling it a "flagrant disregard" for their rights. The foreign ministry said it would demand an explanation from Washington over the "degrading treatment of passengers on the flight". The spat comes as Latin America grapples with US President Donald Trump's return to power bringing a hard-line anti-immigration agenda, promising crackdowns on irregular migration and mass deportations. — AFP
NKorea test-fires strategic cruise missile
SEOUL, Jan 26: North Korea has test-fired sea-to-surface strategic guided cruise missiles, state news agency KCNA reported Sunday, adding that the weapons "precisely" hit their targets. "The war deterrence means of the armed forces of the DPRK are being perfected more thoroughly", North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said as he oversaw Saturday's test, the agency reported. The missiles hit their marks after travelling along the 1,500-kilometre (930-mile) elliptical and figure-eight orbits, the report said, adding that there was "no negative impact on the security of neighbouring countries". KCNA did not say where the test took place. — AFP
Prosecutors indict Yoon over martial law
SEOUL, Jan 26: South Korean prosecutors on Sunday indicted impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol on rebellion in connection with his short-lived imposition of martial law, news reports said, a criminal charges that could put him to death or jail for life if convicted. This is the latest blow to Yoon, who was impeached and arrested over his Dec. 3 martial law decree that plunged the country into huge political turmoil, shaking South Korean politics and financial markets as well as its international image. — AP
Macron's popularity hits new low
PARIS, Jan 26: French President Emmanuel Macron's popularity dropped to a new low since his first election in 2017, in a poll published on Sunday. Just 21 percent of respondents to the Ifop poll published in the Journal de Dimanche newspaper expressed satisfaction with the president. His popularity has sunk even lower than it did during the 2019 stand off with the "yellow vests" movement that saw weekly anti-Macron protests that lasted more than a year. — AFP
