Seven killed in India chopper crash

DEHRADUN, June 15: Seven people including a toddler were killed Sunday in India when a helicopter ferrying Hindu pilgrims from a shrine crashed in the Himalayas, officials said. The fatal accident comes as relatives mourn at least 279 people killed when a passenger plane slammed into a residential area in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad on Thursday. The helicopter crash left the pilot and all six passengers dead when their chopper came down during the flight from Kedarnath temple, in Uttarakhand state, disaster response official Nandan Singh Rajwar said. — AFP

Minnesota lawmaker shot dead

WASHINGTON, June 15: A gunman shot two Democratic state lawmakers in Minnesota early Saturday, killing one and her husband and wounding the other, in what the northern US state's governor said were politically motivated attacks. The shootings came at a moment of deep political divisions in the United States, as thousands took to the streets in protest at the policies of Republican President Donald Trump. The suspected assailant-named in US media reports as 57-year-old Vance Boelter-was still at large, officials said, with a massive manhunt underway. — AFP

Floods in DR Congo capital kill at least 19

KINSHASA, June 15: Floods driven by torrential rain in the capital of Democratic Republic of Congo have killed at least 19 people on Saturday, a provincial minister said. The heavy downpour early in the morning quickly submerged several neighbourhoods of the metropolis of some 17 million people, according to images shared by residents on social media. "This evening we have a provisional toll of 19 dead: 17 in the commune of Ngaliema and two in Lemba and more than 500 homes flooded in the commune of Matete," Kinshasa province interior minister Thierry Kabuya told AFP, reporting "major material damage due to landslides". — AFP

14 perish as minibus, truck collide in I Coast

ABIDJAN, June 15: A minibus and a truck violently collided in southern Ivory Coast, killing at least 14 people including an infant, local sources said Sunday. The collision happened Saturday near the town of Agboville, around 100 kilometres (60 miles) north of Abidjan, the economic capital, said the Ivorian news agency AIP, citing emergency services. Eighteen people were injured in the collision, including six who are in critical condition with major injuries, it said. — AFP

Five killed, two missing in Vietnam floods

HANOI, June 15: Typhoon winds and rains that lashed central Vietnam killed five people and left two more missing, according to an official toll, with huge tracts of farmland flooded by the deluge. Typhoon Wutip made landfall in southern China on Saturday with winds gusting up to 128 kilometres per hour (80 miles per hour) and was downgraded to a tropical storm after swooping up the Gulf of Tonkin on Vietnam's flank. — AFP
