Rubio calls for Cuba to release

Rubio confirmed in a statement the arrival in the United States of artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcantara, and added: "We call for the immediate release of the more than 700 unjustly detained political prisoners held by the regime." Indian court declines to order Wangchuk's
discharge from state-run hospital
NEW DELHI, July 19: Indian authorities were right to move hunger-striking activist Sonam Wangchuk to a government hospital because he had not admitted himself despite his deteriorating health, a court said on Sunday, declining to order his immediate discharge. The Delhi High Court said the government's decision to move Wangchuk to Safdarjung Hospital against his wishes was not arbitrary. It ordered a status report to be filed before the next hearing scheduled for Friday. Wangchuk, 59, has been fasting since June 28 in solidarity with India's Cockroach Janta Party, which was formed by Indian youths and is demanding federal Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan step down over exam paper leaks in May that affected millions of students. — REuters
53 people rescued from capsized
ferry off Guyana coast
GEORGETOWN, July 19: At least 53 people have been rescued after a ferry carrying 116 passengers and crew capsized overnight off the coast of Guyana, Prime Minister Mark Phillips told AFP on Sunday. "(In) a combination of passengers and crew, the number rescued is 53 and it is daylight now so we expect the number to go up," Phillips said by phone. The ferry was traveling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma and had sent a distress signal at around 11:01 pm Saturday (0301 GMT Sunday), according to government minister Juan Edghill. — AFP
