Aid agencies struggle to rescue cyclone

BEIRA, Mar 20: International aid agencies raced Wednesday to rescue survivors and meet spiralling humanitarian needs in three impoverished countries battered by one of the worst storms to hit southern Africa in decades. Five days after tropical cyclone Idai cut a swathe through Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi, the confirmed death toll stood at more than 300 and hundreds of thousands of lives were at risk, officials said. — AFP

LONDON, Mar 20: Fugitive diamond tycoon Nirav Modi, who is wanted over his alleged involvement in a $2 billion banking fraud, has been arrested in London at the request of Indian authorities. The 48-year-old Modi was detained on Tuesday in central London and held overnight in custody, the Metropolitan Police Service said. He is due to appear at London's Westminster Magistrates' Court for a bail hearing later Wednesday. — AP
Two Palestinians die in clashes
JERUSALEM, Mar 20: The Israeli military says it has shot and killed two Palestinians who attacked troops in a West Bank city. The military says several explosive devices were hurled on Wednesday morning at soldiers securing Jewish worshippers at Joseph's Tomb in Nablus. Troops opened fire and killed two of the assailants. — AP
US, Russia divided on Venezuela
ROME, Mar 20: The Trump administration's envoy to Venezuela says the U.S. and Russia remain split on how to resolve the Latin American country's crisis after talks in Italy. Special envoy Elliott Abrams met Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov on Tuesday in Rome. Abrams told reporters "we did not come to a meeting of the minds" but emerged with a better understanding of each other's views. — AP
Taliban kill six paramilitary troops in Pakistan
QUETTA, Mar 20: Pakistani authorities say militants overran a remote security outpost in southwestern Baluchistan province, killing six members of the paramilitary forces. The Pakistani Taliban - known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan - claimed responsibility for the attack in Ziarat district early on Wednesday morning, saying in an Urdu-language statement that it was revenge for the deaths earlier of their comrades at the hands of the paramilitary Baluchistan Levies Force. — AP
American man stabs wife at court
TOKYO, Mar 20: Media reports say Japanese police have arrested an American man on suspicion of fatally stabbing his Japanese wife at a court where they were to settle a divorce. NHK public television says the man, identified only as a 32-year-old U.S. citizen, stabbed the woman in the neck on Wednesday near a security check at the entrance to Tokyo Family Court. It says the man fled but was caught in a nearby park. The 31-year-old victim was rushed to a hospital but later died. — AP
