Abe determined to meet Kim

'face to face'

UNITED NATIONS, Sept 25: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Tuesday that he is determined to meet DPRK leader Kim Jong Un "face to face, without attaching any conditions." During the General Debate of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly, Abe said he wants Japan to normalize relations with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) through resolving their outstanding issues. Japan attaches great importance to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. —Xinhua

Two million children out of

school in war-hit Yemen

SANAA, Sept 25: Two million children are out of school in war-torn Yemen, a fourth of who have dropped out since the conflict escalated in March 2015, the UN children's agency said on Wednesday. The education of a further 3.7 million children is at risk as teachers' salaries have not been paid in more than two years, UNICEF said in a statement. —AFP

UNITED NATIONS, Sept 25: Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro said Tuesday it was a lie that the Amazon was being devastated by fire and accused countries critical of him of having a "colonialist spirit." Speaking first at this year's UN General Assembly, the far-right leader also heaped praise on his American counterpart Donald Trump for respecting his country's sovereignty. Islamic State group have executed one of six aid workers abducted in July in northeast Nigeria, charity group Action Against Hunger said on Wednesday. "The armed group holding captive an employee of Action Against Hunger (ACF), two drivers and three health ministry personnel, have executed a hostage," the Paris-based organisation said in a statement. — AFP

Seven perish as dragon boat

capsizes in Philippines

MANILA, Sept 25: The Philippine coast guard says seven rowers drowned and 14 others were rescued when their dragon boat was suddenly lashed by strong waves and overturned in the central Philippines. Coast guard spokesman Armand Balilo says the accident happened Wednesday off the popular resort island of Boracay in Aklan province where a local dragon boat team was practicing ahead of a rowing competition. — AP

Explosion hits riot police bus

in southern Turkey

ISTANBUL, Sept 25: Turkey's official news agency says a bomb exploded in southern Adana province, wounding five people. The governor's office in Adana said Wednesday the explosion went off as a riot police bus passed. The statement said a police officer was among the wounded. Images of the explosion's aftermath showed a badly damaged bus. — AP
