First woman president of Red Cross

GENEVA, Nov 25: The international Red Cross said Thursday that Swiss diplomat and international worker Mirjana Spoljaric Egger would be its next president, and the first woman to lead the organisation. The current assistant Secretary-General at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will replace Peter Maurer as president of the International Committee of the Red Cross when he steps down next September, the organisation said in a statement. — AFP

Gunmen kill 4 in Cameroon school

YAOUNDE, Nov 25: Unidentified gunmen killed three students and one teacher on Wednesday in an attack on a government school in Cameroon's war-torn Anglophone region of Southwest, according to local authorities. The assailants stormed Government Bilingual High School in Ekondo Titi locality by 7:30 a.m. local time when students were studying, and detonated an improvised explosive device, the Divisional Officer of Ekondo Titit, Timothe Aboloa said. — Xinhua

Missing India police officer reappears

MUMBAI, Nov 25: A top Indian police officer who is accused of extortion has resurfaced months after he went missing from Mumbai city. Parambir Singh, the city's 59-year-old former police chief, turned up at a local police station on Thursday. He reappeared two days after the Supreme Court granted Mr Singh protection from arrest, while ordering him to cooperate in the investigation. — BBC
