Thousands protest in Dublin over housing problem
DUBLIN, Dec 02: Thousands of people took to the streets in the Irish capital Dublin on Saturday afternoon to protest over the deteriorating housing issue in the country. Holing banners and placards and chanting slogans, the protestors marched through the city's busiest road O'Connell Street, drawing large crowds of audience and causing a temporary traffic disruption in parts of the downtown area, but no violence was reported throughout the protest.--Xinhua
Fighting leaves 18 dead in Afghanistan
MAIMANA, Afghanistan, Dec 02: A total of 18 people including 11 militants have been killed as clash erupted between security forces and the Taliban outfit in the northern Faryab province, a member of provincial council Abdul Ahad Albeg said on Sunday. The clash, according to the official, broke out after the Taliban militants launched coordinated attacks on security checkpoints in Andkhoy and Qarghan districts late Saturday night and the government forces returned fire, triggering gun battle which has left 11 militants and seven security personnel dead.--AFP
Bahrain conducts 'free and fair' elections
MANAMA, Dec 02: Bahrain has successfully conducted "free and fair" elections, Justice, Islamic, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ali Al Khalifa said on Saturday. "We are capable and ready of starting (e-voting) in the next elections," said Khalifa in a press conference as polling stations across Bahrain closed on Saturday. Uganda road crash claims seven lives
KAMPALA, Dec 02: At least seven people were killed and 17 others injured in a road accident in the central Ugandan district of Buvuma, a police spokesperson said here on Saturday. Patrick Onyango, Uganda's deputy police spokesperson told Xinhua in an interview that the fatal accident occurred after the driver of a truck lost control and swerved off the road at Walwanda Mosque junction.--Xinhua
Canada to reassess Cuba presence over diplomat's brain injuries
OTTAWA, Dec 02: Canada said on Saturday it will send a delegation to Cuba next week to reevaluate its presence there after another diplomat was diagnosed with a mysterious brain injury that has affected several dozen North American envoys to the island. Since 2016, 13 Canadians and 25 Americans have all reported similar unexplained symptoms, including dizziness, fatigue, headaches, hearing and vision complications, a loss of balance, nausea and an inability to concentrate.—AFP
Poroshenko urges German naval presence in the Black Sea
MOSCOW, Dec 02: Ukraine's leader has called on Germany and its allies to boost their naval presence in the Black Sea to deter Russia from further aggression in the region. President Petro Poroshenko says Russia has deployed a large number of troops along its border with Ukraine. He warns that Russia intends to push further inland into Ukraine following last week's naval clash between their forces in the Black Sea. —AP
