Maldives court suspends jail term of Nasheed
MALE, Oct 30: The Maldives Supreme Court has suspended a 13-year jail sentence given to the country's exiled former president until it reviews his conviction as requested by the prosecutor general. The Supreme Court ordered on Tuesday that the government, police and prison authorities adhere to the suspension of the sentence for the former president, Mohamed Nasheed. — AP
Typhoon strikes Philippines
MANILA, Oct 30: Typhoon Yutu slammed into the Philippines on Tuesday with fierce winds that sheared off roofs and snapped trees in half, after thousands were evacuated ahead of the powerful storm's arrival. Cutting a path just south of last month's Typhoon Mangkhut, which killed dozens, the new storm tore across the Philippines' most populous island and dumped heavy rains along the way. — AFP

Italy storms claim nine lives
MILAN, Oct 30: At least nine people have been killed over two days in Italy as heavy rains and high winds buffet much of the country. The news agency ANSA said on Tuesday that the deaths included a woman who was buried by mud when a landslide invaded her home and a firefighter who was struck by a tree while responding to the emergency, both in the northern region of Trentino-Alto Adige. — AP
