Building collapses in Kenya, leaves three dead
NAIROBI, June 03: Three people have been killed when a building collapsed in Nairobi's low income residential area of Huruma, a police official and witnesses said Sunday. Pius Masai Mwachi of the National Disaster Management Unit said a rescue operation is going on after a five-story residential building collapsed early Sunday in the Ngei area of Huruma. — AP
Palestinian dies in Israeli shooting
GAZA, June 03: Mohammed Naaim Hamada, 30, died on Sunday morning east of the Gaza Strip as a result of wounds inflicted by Israeli security forces on May 14. Israeli forces shot Hamada during the Great March of Return protests that coincided with the opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem, and a day before Palestinians marked 70 years since the Nakba. Hamada's death takes the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces since the protests began to at least 121. Meanwhile, Razan al-Najjar was killed by Israeli live fire during the protests east of the south Gaza city of Khan Younis. — Al Jazeera
Half of Afghan children are not in school
KABUL, June 03: A new report says nearly half of Afghanistan's children are not attending school because of war, poverty, child marriage and other factors. The study, released by the Education Ministry and the UN children's agency on Sunday, says 3.7 million, or 44 per cent, of all school-age children are not attending school. — AP
Cattle rustlers kill 23 in Nigeria
KANO, June 03: Cattle thieves have killed 23 people in northern Nigeria's Zamfara state which has been battling cattle rustling and kidnapping in recent months, a local government official said late Saturday. BAGHDAD, June 03: An Iraqi court has sentenced a French woman to life term in prison for membership in the Islamic State group. Melina Boughedir (28), was initially sentenced to six months in jail for entering the country illegally, but the court imposed a tougher sentence Sunday after prosecutors presented new evidence. — AP
