Pope urges EU to show solidarity with migrants

VATICAN CITY, Jan 06: Pope Francis on Sunday urged EU leaders to show "concrete solidarity" with 49 migrants stranded on NGO ships off the coast of Malta who have been refused permission to land. "Forty nine migrants rescued in the Mediterranean by two NGO ships have been onboard for several days now, waiting to be able to disembark," Francis told thousands of people gathered in Saint Peter's square in Rome. "I address a pressing appeal to European leaders that they show some concrete solidarity with respect to these people," he added. — AFP

Three die during cold snap in Greece

ATHENS, Jan 06: Three people have died in Greece as stormy weather and freezing temperatures gripped most of the country, officials said on Sunday. The bodies of two elderly men were found Sunday, two days after their car was swept away by flood waters near Athens, the fire department said. A day earlier, rescue crews had found a 66-year-old woman dead inside the same car in the rural area of Keratea. — AFP

Venezuela's congress vows to battle Maduro

CARACAS, Jan 06: Venezuela's opposition-controlled congress opened its first session of the year on Saturday, installing a fresh-faced leader who struck a defiant tone and vowed to take up the battle against socialist President Nicolas Maduro. Juan Guaido, 35, assumes the presidency of a National Assembly stripped of power by Maduro, whose government is blamed for leading the once-wealthy oil nation into a historic political and humanitarian crisis. — AP

Thousands rally against Serbia leader

BELGRADE, Jan 06: Thousands of people have braved snow and freezing temperatures in Serbia's capital to turn up for the fifth week of street protests against populist President Aleksandar Vucic. The demonstrators marched through downtown Belgrade blowing whistles and booing and jeering loudly as they passed the Serbian presidency building on Saturday. Some carried Serbian flags and banners reading "We are the people" or "Down with the thieves."-AP

Taiwan's ruling party to elect new head

TAIPEI, Jan 06: Taiwan's ruling party began electing a new chairman on Sunday - a post vacated by President Tsai Ing-wen after a recent electoral mauling - in a vote closely watched by China and the United States. Tsai and her Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) won a 2016 landslide, sweeping away a government that had built much closer ties to China over the previous decade. The result rattled Beijing because Tsai refuses to acknowledge that the self-ruled island is part of "one China". — AFP

Australia PM slams 'ugly racial protests'

SYDNEY, Jan 06: Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Sunday slammed "ugly racial protests" in Australia's second-largest city, after some far-right demonstrators were seen making Nazi salutes. An anti-immigration rally at St Kilda Beach in Melbourne drew hundreds of demonstrators and counter-protesters on Saturday, but a large Victoria Police presence was broadly successful in keeping the two groups apart. "I thank Vic police for their efforts dealing with the ugly racial protests we saw in St Kilda yesterday. — AFP
