First signs go up for US embassy in Jerusalem

JERUSALEM, May 07: Workmen on Monday put up street signs to the US embassy due to open in Jerusalem on May 14, a move hailed as historic by Israel but loathed by Palestinians. Municipal workers erected signposts reading "US Embassy" in Hebrew, Arabic and English around the site, currently a US consular building, in the city's Arnona neighbourhood. Breaking with decades of US diplomacy and international consensus President Donald Trump announced on December 06 the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the transfer of the embassy, located until now in Tel Aviv. The embassy is to get a festive inauguration next Monday. — Reuters

Saudi police gun down killer of four security men

RIYADH, May 07: Saudi police gunned down a terrorist who killed four security men and resisted arrest to attack the police forces with a knife, Saudi Press Agency reported on Monday. According to the agency's statement, the killed terrorist is a Saudi man. Security forces besieged the house of his parents and called on him to turn himself over. However, he refused and attacked security forces with a knife, which led to his death at the hospital of injuries he sustained during the clashes. Last month, three police officers were shot dead in an attack on a security checkpoint in Asir, a city in the southwest of Saudi Arabia, while another policeman died in crossfire while trying to arrest the attackers. — Xinhua

India puts 13 states on high storm alert

NEW DELHI, May 07: India has put as many as 13 of its states and two central government-territories on high storm alert for the next 48 hours. In an advisory, the Indian Home Ministry has said that thunderstorms and rains are likely to occur in these 13 states and two central government-controlled territories Monday and Tuesday, asking the respective governments to take all necessary precautions. The alert, citing a weather department prediction, comes after rains, thunderstorms, dust storms and lightning claimed the lives of over 125 people in five states in India last week. — Xinhua
