Russia strikes Odesa city hours

before Putin-Lukashenko talks

KYIV, July 23: The Ukrainian port city of Odesa came under renewed Russian missile attack early Sunday, just hours before President Vladimir Putin was due to hold a summit with his staunch Belarus ally Alexander Lukashenko. At the meeting in Saint Petersburg, the pair plan to discuss the "strategic partnership and alliance" between their countries, according to the Kremlin. It will be the first time they have met since Lukashenko helped end a dramatic mutiny by Russian mercenaries from the Wagner group. — AFP

Iraq offers to mediate to end Yemen war

BAGHDAD, July 23: Iraq has offered to mediate between warring parties in Yemen in an effort to end the country's years-long war, Iraq's top diplomat said at a press conference on Sunday. Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein put forward the proposal during a visit from his Yemeni counterpart. Iran-backed Huthi rebels seized the capital Sanaa in 2014, before a Saudi-led military coalition intervened the following year on the side of the country's internationally recognised government. Hundreds of thousands of people have died in the fighting or from indirect causes such as lack of food in what the United Nations has called one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. — AFP

China rains cause 5 deaths

BEIJING, July 23: Five people died and two were missing, after heavy rain burst a river bank in a village near eastern China's Hangzhou city on Saturday, flooding houses and carrying away people and their belongings, state media reported. Muddy water gushed through streets in a village in Dayuan township, pouring into houses and turning over cars, pictures published by the Beijing Youth Daily showed. China typically sees heavy rain in late July, but storms have become more intense and unpredictable in recent years. — Reuters

13 mourners killed in Congo shooting

ITURI, July 23: At least 13 people including nine children were killed when a soldier in east Democratic Republic of Congo opened fire on people gathered to mourn his deceased child on Saturday night, the army and a local official said on Sunday. The shooting occurred in the village of Nyakova on the banks of Lake Albert in Congo's eastern Ituri province. "The soldier opened fire on all those around him. A dozen people died," Ituri army spokesman Jules Ngongo said via telephone. Search teams are looking for the soldier, a member of Congo's navy, and an investigation into the incident has been opened, he said. — Reuters

Copter crashes into Alaska lake

ANCHORAGE, July 23: A rescue and recovery dive team was deployed Saturday after a helicopter with a pilot and three state workers crashed in a large lake on Alaska's North Slope, officials said. No survivors have been located. "The official word is, they are missing, presumed fatal," said Clint Johnson, the chief of the National Transportation Safety Board's Alaska region. An NTSB investigator was also en route to the accident scene Saturday as plans were being made to recover the wreckage from the water, he said. — AP

3 hurt in Japan train stabbing

TOKYO, July 23: Three people were hurt in a knife attack on a train in western Japan on Sunday, with police saying they had arrested a man for allegedly carrying out the stabbings. The victims-a train conductor in his 20s and two male passengers aged in their 20s and 70s-were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Tetsuya Sakagami from a nearby fire department said. — AFP
