Angry Russia refuses to speak at UN meeting
on its attacks on Ukraine's port city Odesa
UNITED NATIONS, July 27: In an escalation of Russia's anger at Ukraine and its Western backers, Russia refused to speak at a U.N. Security Council meeting called to disuss Moscow's recent devastating attacks on the key port of Odesa immediately following its refusal to extend the Black Sea grain deal. The confrontation began at the start of a council session called by Russia on the divided Orthodox Church in Ukraine. Russia's deputy U.N. ambassador, Dmitry Polyansky ,protested that Britain, which holds the council presidency, was allowing only two briefers and Moscow wanted a third - Archbishop Gideon of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. — AP
23 dead as boat capsizes in Philippines
MANILA, July 27: A small boat capsized in a lake near the Philippine capital on Thursday, killing 23 people on board and leaving six others missing, rescuers said. The accident occurred in the early afternoon at Laguna lake, 37 kilometres (23 miles) southeast of Manila, hours after Typhoon Doksuri had swept out of the northern Philippines, coast guard spokesman Rear Admiral Armando Balilo said. — AFP
India allows Muslim procession in Kashmir
SRINAGAR, July 27: Thousands of Shiite Muslims were allowed to hold a religious procession marking the Muslim month of Muharram in Indian-controlled Kashmir's main city on Thursday for the first time since an anti-India rebellion broke out in the disputed region more than three decades ago. The participants, mostly wearing black clothes, beat their chests and recited elegies in the commercial heart of Srinagar. — AP
Jihadists kill 32 in Nigeria attacks
KANO, July 27: Suspected Islamic State-affiliated jihadists have killed 32 people, including 25 herders, in two attacks in northeast Nigeria's Borno state, anti-jihadist militia told AFP Thursday. The attacks happened on Tuesday in the Lake Chad area, where the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) controls swathes of territory. — AFP
