Fair prices delight Sirajganj Malabar spinach cultivators

SIRAJGANJ, Nov 11: Malabar spinach (Puishak) cultivators in the district are delighted over the fair prices this season.

Sources said commercial farming of the leafy vegetable is popular here. A good number of grassroots cultivators attained financial solvency by cultivating the item.

Sub-assistance agriculture officer of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Azizur Rahman said over 400 hectares of land have been brought under the vegetable cultivation in the district.

Farmer Anarul Hossain of Kazipur upazila said he cultivated Malabar spinach in nine decimals of land this season spending Tk 2,700.

He further said he has already sold some 200 kg of the vegetable at Tk 2,500 and is expecting to make a profit of Tk 32,000 till the last week of January.

Each kg of Malabar spinach is being sold at Tk 20 to Tk 25 in the retail market and Tk 15 to Tk 20 in the wholesale market.

Deputy Director of DAE Md Arshad Ali said, "We have provided all necessary agri-inputs among the farmers to make the programme a grand success."
