New cabinet secy, DMP commissioner

The government has appointed Bridges Division Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam as the new cabinet secretary. Islam will replace Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal told reporters after a meeting at the Cabinet Division on Wednesday. Meanwhile, additional Inspector General of Police (Addl IGP) Mohammad Shafiqul Islam has been made new Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). Public Security Division under the Home Ministry issued a notification Wednesday in this regard. The order will come into effect immediately, it said.

Expats to get NID cards abroad from Sept

The Election Commission plans to begin registration of Bangladeshi expatriates in the second week of September to provide them with national identity cards. The commission is waiting for the Singapore government's permission for starting the project there. Suspended DIG Mizan denied bail again

A court here on Wednesday denied bail to suspended Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police Mizanur Rahman in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Judge of the Dhaka Senior Special Judge Court KM Imrul Kayes passed the order after hearing a bail petition and fixed October 2 for submission of the investigation report before it in the case. —UNB
