FE Report | August 29, 2019 00:00:00

Three more people reportedly died from dengue on Wednesday. Besides, 1,157 people were infected afresh with the viral disease until 8.00 am on the day, which was 11 per cent lower than that of Tuesday.

The dengue-related deaths were reported in Khulna, Mymensingh and Munshiganj.

Hafizul Islam, 30, a ready-made garment worker, died from the viral disease in Trishal under Mymensingh, while being taken to Dhaka from there.

Shahida Begum, 50, died at the Khulna Medical College Hospital.

Ariful Islam, a resident of Munshiganj, died while undergoing treatment in the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

In the meantime, the Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) received a total of 177 death reports, suspected to be caused by dengue, until Wednesday.

After examining 88 death cases among these, the IEDCR confirmed that 52 died from dengue disease, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Among the 1,157 newly-infected people, some 551 were admitted to hospitals and clinics in Dhaka city, and 606 were in various parts of the country, it added.

Of the total, the DMCH admitted the highest 90 patients alone.

On Tuesday, some 1,299 people across the country were reportedly infected with dengue.

The death toll in dengue outbreak has reached 52 so far, according to the government data. But, local media reported that over 100 people have died across the country.

The DGHS data shows that August has already broken all previous records of dengue infection in a single month with 48,760 people infected until Wednesday (August 28).

A total of 67,221 people were infected with the disease in this year (until August 28). Among the total, some 61,822 people were released from the hospitals across the country as of Wednesday morning. Some 5,222 are still taking treatment, according to the government data.

Among the hospitalised victims, 2,882 people are undergoing treatment in hospitals in Dhaka, while some 2,340 people are taking treatment in rest parts of the country, it added.

The government agencies concerned have taken extra measures, including increasing awareness, as panic-stricken people in and out of the city are found rushing to different hospitals and clinics.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) said there is no specific treatment for the viral fever. But, early detection and proper medication can lower its fatality rate below one percent.

Besides, cleanliness and awareness are the pre-measures to fight the disease, it added.
