Use full powers to curb polls irregularities, CEC asks EICs

FE Report | December 06, 2018 00:00:00

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda has directed the Electoral Inquiry Committees (EICs) to exercise their full powers to check irregularities during the upcoming 11th parliamentary election.

"You must use your full powers to check irregularities during the election," he told the heads of the committees in a training session at the Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital on Wednesday.

The Election Commission (EC) formed the EICs headed by district judges in districts to oversee full implementation of the electoral code of conduct, curb irregularities and take action against the offenders during the general election slated for December 30, he said.

Taking cognizance of the complaints lodged by any candidates in the election, the judges of the EIC must take initiatives, said Mr Huda.

He called upon the EICs members to actively discharge their duties/responsibilities entrusted upon them.

The CEC said the EC received complaints about violations of the electoral code of conduct at some places.

He also expressed his resentment, saying that some committees were formed at the field level earlier with joint district judges as the committee heads were not discharging their duties properly.
