MEWOE to probe assault on Bangladeshi man in Brunei

The Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment (MEWOE) will investigate the incident of physical assault on a man by some people at the Bangladesh embassy in Brunei.

The ministry will also take necessary action based on the evidence against those involved in the incident, said a press release, issued by the ministry on Wednesday.

Terming the incident 'unexpected', the press release said 'the incident that took place in the Bangladesh High Commission in Brunei on August 21 has been published in different media.

The ministry has come to know the matter and will conduct the investigation properly to take necessary action against the people involved with the incident to ensure safe, orderly and dignified migration, the release added.

A video footage released in different media showed some Bangladeshi people beating a Bangladeshi man heartlessly in front of an official at the Bangladesh High Commission in Bandar Seri Begawan.

Mainly middlemen are controlling recruitment of Bangladeshi workers in Brunei, said official sources.

About 75 workers are going to the Southeast Asian country without clearance of the Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training, the sources added.

Nearly 30,000 Bangladeshi workers are working in Brunei, with most of them employed in the construction sector.

But Brunei needs a large number of skilled workers like tile fixers, electricians and maintenance workers and the wages of the experienced workers are much higher than those of the unskilled ones, according to the Bangladesh High commission in Brunei.
