Rajshahi City Bhaban breeding ground for Aedes mosquitoes

RAJSHAHI, Aug 28: Though the authorities of Rajshahi City Corporation have started a "massive" programme to control spread of mosquitoes, Rajshahi City Bhaban itself is now a favoured breeding ground for Aedes mosquitoes.

Moreover, in every ward of under RCC, there are hundreds of spots where Aedes mosquitoes are breeding safely.

On the sunshade of City Bhaban Green Plaza rain water was seen to accumulate. The water is never cleared or let out. Water also accumulated inside the plastic dustbin placed outside the Green Plaza.

This garbage bin is also not cleaned regularly. The used banners and festoons, kept stored at the south side of RCC Bhaban, were seen to be filled with rainwater where Aedes mosquito can be breed easily.

Even, sodium bulbs and electrical equipment kept at the corner of the building are filled with stagnant water.

The floor where plastic dustbins have been kept beside the bicycle garage is also filled with rotten leaves in stagnant water.

In Daspukur area of ward-3, stagnant water was seen accumulated in a field. In every ward under RCC, there are several hundred spots where stagnant water was seen to breed Aedes mosquitoes.

Poribesh Andolon Oikkya Parishad, an NGO, has found larvae of Aedes mosquitoes in different spots of various wards of the city. The PAOP activists said they detected presence of larvae at the vehicle dumping centres of all the police stations under RMP.

Aedes larvae were also detected in various spots of accumulated water in and outside of the Rajshahi Railway Station and Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

Sheikh Muhammad Mamun, Chief Conservator of Rajshahi City Corporation claimed, they used to clean the spots where water is accumulated regularly. However, he assured to clean rest of the spots - of accumulated water - soon.
