RANGPUR, Sept 30: Sand lifting from the Tangon river in the Collegepara area under Thakurgaon Sadar upazila is going on unabated, posing serious threat to the embankment and nearby establishments.

Local people said a section of influential people have been continuing this indiscriminate sand lifting from near the river dyke, intensifying river erosion.

As a result, the dyke is facing a serious threat. The sand lifters have been extracting sand by sinking pipes into the bed of the river with dredgers from the area for over one week but the authority concerned seems to be oblivious to the matter, they further alleged.

Many establishments including high- rise buildings near the river bank are also threatened by erosion, locals said. They said the authorities concerned should take immediate measures to stop this illegal act.

If sand lifting continues for long, the river embankment and nearby establishments including Muktijoddha Complex may collapse any time, locals feared.

In this situation local people urged the authority concerned to take necessary steps against the culprits soon and stop sand lifting from Tangon river.
