FE REPORT | August 25, 2020 00:00:00

With 3,784 more coronavirus patients getting recovered, the recovery rate in the country crossed 61 per cent for the first time on Monday, official data showed.

As of August 24, the total tally of recovery rose to 182,875 in Bangladesh among 297,083 confirmed cases, according to the state-run Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Although the recovery rate is still below the global average of over 70 per cent, the trend of local COVID-19 patients getting cured is going up fast, which health care professionals term 'encouraging'.

Like infections and deaths, Dhaka division accounted for around 50 per cent of the total recovery, followed by Chattogram, Sylhet, Khulna, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Barishal and Mymensingh, the DGHS sources said.

In the last 24 hours, ending on Monday noon, some 2,485 more people tested coronavirus positive, while 42 more patients succumbed due to the respiratory disease caused by novel coronavirus.

With the latest deaths, the tally of fatalities nears 4,000-mark, and around half of them are aged above 60 years.

On Monday's health bulletin on coronavirus, the DGHS said a total of 13,382 samples were tested across the country since Sunday noon.

Of these, some 2,485 samples were found COVID-19 positive along with 42 more deaths recorded across the country during the period, it mentioned.

"With these numbers, the overall tally of confirmed cases and deaths rose to 2,97,083 and 3,983 respectively," mentioned the bulletin, signed by DGHS additional director general Dr Nasima Sultana.

The infections were confirmed by the country's designated labs from a total of 14,56,038 samples tested so far. The infection rate was 20.40 per cent, which was the second highest in South Asia after Afghanistan.

Of the total deaths, 48.20 per cent were recorded in Dhaka division, followed by Chattogram (22.09 per cent), Khulna (8.08 per cent), Rajshahi (6.78 per cent), Sylhet (4.62 per cent), Rangpur (4.19 per cent), Barishal (3.89 per cent), and Mymensingh (2.13 per cent), it added.

Globally, over 23.6 million people have been infected by the novel coronavirus, and 813,070 have died until Monday 6:30 pm, according to Worldometer info.
