Police recovering the elder child from Nuruzzaman Kajal after he allegedly killed his younger son at Bangla Motor in the city on Wednesday - FE photo The police recovered on Wednesday the body of a baby boy from inside a house in the capital's Bangla Motor area and arrested the 'drug addict' father of the victim.
The boy named Safayet was two and a half years old.
The law enforcers, however, could rescue unhurt the victim's brother Surayet, 4, from the house.
On information, the police along with members of the elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Ansar and the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed to the spot, a two-storey house, and initiated the rescue operation.
Police members first tried to convince the father of the victims, Akhtaruzzaman Kajol, to calm but failed.
He might be a drug addict, the police said citing the family sources.
On Wednesday morning, Kajol called his relatives and said one of his sons had died.
The relatives of Kajol rushed to the house but they failed to enter there. Later, they informed the police of it.
Kajol initially did not respond to repeated requests of the law enforcers to let them enter the house. Kajol threatened to kill his elder son, if they tried to enter.
Later, the police told Kajol that they were going to offer Namaz-e-janaza for Safayet. Finally, Kajol came out, said police sources and witnesses. Relatives and locals were waiting outside the house.
The police said they did not see any cut mark or wound on the body of the child.
Police could not confirm the cause of death of Safayet.
Officer-in-charge of Shahbag Police Station Abul Hossain told the FE that the dead body had been sent to morgue for autopsy and the mystery could be unlocked on receipt of the autopsy report.
A case was being lodged in this connection, he told the FE.
Wife of Akhtaruzzaman Kajol had left him because of his drug addiction. Kajol lived with the two sons.
