Stocks edge up as banks keep gaining

DSEX adds 80 points in four straight sessions

Stocks posted marginal gain on Wednesday, extending the gaining streak for the four straight sessions, as investors showed their buying spree on banking issues.

Market operators said a section of investors continued to show their buying binge on banking shares while some rebalanced their portfolio, taking the market into the green zone.

The market opened on positive note and the core index rose about 40 points within first hour of trading. But rest of the session could not sustain the early gains.

At the end of the session, DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), settled at 5,361, advancing 15.68 points or 0.29 per cent.

DSEX added 80 points in the four straight sessions.

"The upward shift in the index is mainly driven by significant positive changes in large-cap sectors like banking, financial institutions and insurance," commented LankaBangla Securities.

Banking sector posted the highest gain of 1.38 per cent, followed by engineering with 0.52 per cent, financial institutions 0.41 per cent and food 0.12 per cent.

Pharmaceuticals witnessed the highest loss of 0.52 per cent, followed by telecommunication with 0.43 per cent and power 0.18 per cent.

The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, also advanced 2.06 points to finish at 1,872. However, the DSE Shariah Index fell 3.69 points to close at 1,231.

Turnover, another important indicator of the market, stood at Tk 6.79 billion, which was 1.46 per cent lower than the previous day's turnover of Tk 6.83 billion.

The textile sector kept its dominance in the turnover chart, grabbing 27 per cent of the day's total turnover, followed by pharmaceuticals with 15 per cent and engineering 14 per cent.

A total number of 160,823 trades were executed in the day's trading session with trading volume of 215.84 million securities.

The market capitalisation of the DSE stood at Tk 3,841 billion on the day which was Tk 3,840 billion in the previous day.

Of the 340 issues traded, 176 advanced, 131 drifted lower and 33 issues remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

Dragon Sweater topped the DSE turnover chart with 12.70 million shares worth Tk 333 million changing hands.

The other turnover leaders were Western Marine Shipyard Tk 225 million, Brac Bank Tk 216 million, Paramount Textile Tk 201 million and BBS Cables Tk 172 million.

RN Spinning was the day's best performer, posting a gain of 10 per cent while ML Dyeing was the worst loser, losing 9.92 per cent.

The port city's bourse, the Chittagong Stock Exchange, also edged higher with its CSE All Share Price Index - CASPI -gaining 52 points to settle at 16,429 and the Selective Categories Index - CSCX -gaining 25 points to finish at 9,945.

The gainers beat losers as 114 issues closed higher, 105 ended lower and 28 remained unchanged on the CSE.

The port city's bourse traded 13.48 million shares and mutual fund units worth more than Tk 298 million in turnover.
