ADB annual meeting begins in Fiji today

The 52nd annual meeting of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will kick off today (Wednesday) in Nadi of Fiji with a view to cutting hunger and accelerating economic growth at the Asia and Pacific region.

Hundreds of delegates from different countries have thronged the small Pacific island country Fiji to attend the event.

A Bangladesh delegation, led by Economic Relations Division Secretary Monowar Ahmed, is expected to take part in the five-day programme at Nadi.

Ms Ayun Sundari, communication specialist of ADB in Manila, said they were waiting to host the hundreds of guests from 68 member countries across the Asia Pacific region at the 52nd annual meeting of ADB.

Most of the participants arrived on Tuesday at the tourist city.

Everyday lots of events including seminars, discussions will be take place here over the next five days, Ms Sundari said.

Of the events, the participants will attend an important discussion on "ADB strategy 2030's Operational Priorities" today and another discussion on the South Asia region.

ADB President Takehiko Nakao already arrived in Fiji to participate in the 52nd annual meeting of Manila-based multilateral lender.

About 400 local volunteers are working to take care of the participants from home and abroad at the annual meeting.

Tight security measures have been taken to host the event, the largest ever in the history of the island country.
