Expatriate Bangladeshis urged to invest more in country

Speakers at a seminar in New York emphasised that expatriate Bangladeshis in USA invest more in Bangladesh to help make it a middle-income country by 2021 and attain Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, reports BSS.

Highlighting the prospects of making investment in Bangladesh, the speakers at the business seminar on the sidelines of the 74th United Nations General Assembly session in New York City also stressed the need for thinking about merit-based remittance apart from the existing remittance flow.

The seminar on 'US-Bangladesh Trade and Investment: Role of Bangladeshi Americans' was jointly organised by the America Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce (ABCC) and the Centre for NRB at the hall room of LaGuardia Marriott Hotel, said a press release received in Dhaka.

Foreign Minister A K Abdul Momen, Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Shahabuddin Ahmed, PM's Private Industry and Investment Adviser Salman F Rahman, Principal Coordinator on SDG Affairs at the Prime Minister's Office Abul Kalam Azad, General Economics Division (GED) member of the Planning Commission Dr Shamsul Alam and Consul General of Bangladesh Consulate in New York Sadia Faizunnesa were present and spoke, among others.

Besides, ABCC Director Abdul Kader Miah, BASIS President Almas Kabir, Founder of Princeton Alpha USA Dr Shakil Ahmed, Bangladeshi Economist Dr Ahmed Al Kabir and Economic Minister of Bangladesh Embassy in Washington Shahabuddin Patwary also spoke.

The keynote speech was presented by chairperson of NRB Shekil Chowdhury, the welcome speech was delivered by secretary general and CEO of ABCC Md Liton Ahmed while ZI Russell of ABCC, USA, gave the vote of thanks.
