Gopalganj growers expect good yield of BARI Mustard -14

GOPALGANJ, Jan 21: Farmers of Suktail Union under Sadar Upazila of the district are excepting a bumper production of BARI Mustard -14 this year.

Subal Kirtania (70), a farmer of village Suchidanga under Suktail Union of Sadar Upazila told The FE, "I have cultivated BARI Mustard -14 on two bighas of land (104 decimal) spending about Tk 10,000 and I expect above 12 maunds of mustard market price of which is Tk 36,000.

Azizul Sheikh (37), a farmer of village Suktail under Suktail Union of Sadar Upazila said, "I cultivated BARI Mustard -14 on 26 decimal of land and I will get above 03 maunds of Mustard valued at Tk 10,000 whereas spent Tk 2,200 only.

Some farmers in this area told The FE that about 800 farmers have cultivated BARI Mustard-14 this season and its cultivation is increasing day by day because the farmers are getting more benefit from the produce.

Ranjit Biswas, Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officer (SAAO), Suktail Union of Sadar Upazila told The FE that two years back farmers in this region had begun cultivating this high- yielding variety for getting more benefit in short duration with small investment.

According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Gopalganj sources, a total of 3,030 hectares of land have been brought under BARI Mustard-14 cultivation this season and its probable production target is 3,939 tonnes.

According to the official, the break- up of cultivated land is-Gopalganj Sadar Upazila 1,235 hectares, Muksudpur Upazila 920 hectares, Kasian Upazila 595 hectares, Kotalipara Upazila 120 hectares and Tungipara Upazila 160 hectares of land have been brought under BARI Mustard-14 farming this year.

Samir Kumar Gwashami, Deputy Director (DD), Agriculture Extension, Gopalganj told The FE, BARI Mustard -14 is a profitable crop for the farmers in our country because they can harvest this crop within 80 to 90 days only. Its production cost is low but market rate is high. As a result, farmers can get more benefit from the crop, he added.

Farmers in this region will achieve the production target of the crop this year, he hoped.
