Nilphamari growers happy over bitter gourd price

NILPHAMARI, June 26: Commercial cultivation of bitter gourd is gaining popularity across the district.

A good number of farmers said they got a bumper yield of the vegetable this season.

The growers are happy over the present market price.

Nonda Kumar, sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE, said the department has taken special measures to expand the farming of the popular vegetable.

Abu Alam of Ithakola union under Sadar upazila said he is selling bitter gourd at Tk 30 per kg to the retail traders. He said he had cultivated the item at his homestead.

Another farmer Ishaq Ali said he cultivated bitter gourd on one acre of land spending Tk 20,000. He said he would be able to make a profit of Tk 0.1 million this season.

Sources said most of the farmers in the area cultivate onion and bitter gourd on the same land at the same time. After harvesting the onion they began to start nursing the bitter gourd plants.
