RU takes plan to execute infrastructure projects

RAJSHAHI UNIVERSITY, June 26: The Rajshahi University (RU) authority has taken a 25-year master plan to execute various infrastructure development projects on the campus.

The university administration revealed the information this morning at a views exchange meeting at the university's Sayed Tajuddin Ahmed Senate building.

Vice-chancellor Prof. M Abdus Sobhan was present as the chief guest while Pro-VCs Prof. Ananda Kumar Saha and Prof Chowdhury Muhammed Zakaria addressed the meeting as special guests.

An official of Sheltech Consultants Ltd, a technical partner of the project, presented a primary design of the master plan before the meeting.

Aiming at beautification the whole campus, RU is implementing various infrastructure development works at an estimated cost of around Tk 33.80 billion.

To compete with other universities of the world, the master plan is being taken to improve the quality of RU students' education environment.

To implement such project ECNEC (Executive Committee of National Economic Council) has already approved the required fund in March this year, informed the convener of Master Plan Execution Committee and also Pro-VC Prof. Chowdhury Muhammed Zakaria.

Sources said, despite fund limitations, the university is taking various future development and renovation plans on the campus.

These are two 10-storied male and female residential halls, 20-storied central Science building and ICT buildings and 5-megawatt power station.

The proposed names of the residential halls are: 'Sheikh Hasina Hall' and 'Shaheed Qamaruzzaman Hall'.

Moreover, modification of building for Sheikh Russell Model School, fourth Science building, fourth Arts building, Motihar hall and remaining works of Agriculture faculty building will be completed in the future.

Under the master plan RU will also establish a park, a cultural centre for music and theatre department, construct a modern drainage system, modernise the cafeteria and widen the internal streets on the campus.

A 10-storey administrative building will also be set up to smoothen the university's administrative activities. Besides, erection of a boundary wall around the campus, construction of a footbridge at the main gate and drainage projects have been incorporated into the master plan.

To implement these projects, university experts have made a set of recommendations, including the generation of more income from internal sources and embarking on cost cuts, VC Prof. Abdus Sobhan said.
