Need for proper drainage system in Dhaka

July 23, 2019 00:00:00

Dhaka is one of the most populous cities not just in Bangladesh, but in the world. Thousands of people come here every day for the sake of their livelihood. These people are living in this city while struggling through numerous problems.

Often the road excavation and repair work being done by different state-owned utility companies can be seen in different parts of the city. At times, these are done to repair and improve the drainage system. This leads to traffic congestion and other problems. But we see that there has been little to no improvement as soon as it rains for a few minutes. Under the circumstances, some of the busiest roads in this megacity become water-logged.

Mirpur is a very popular residential area of Dhaka city. At present, it is known as the 'Venice of Dhaka'. This is because after a brief downpour, water accumulates till waist-height of an average person. This affects people from all segments of life, age and gender living in this area and coming to this area for business and other purposes.

It is not only the government that can ensure clean and proper drains. Most of us throw polythene bags and other trash into the drains and manholes. These get stuck and when it rains, the water cannot flow through the drains.

We need to change ourselves and take sustainable steps that will ensure a better Dhaka city. As such, the responsibility to keep our city liveable falls on everyone who resides in this city.
