The Cabinet has approved a policy of the Mother of Humanity Award under which the government would give 'Mother of Humanity Award' to the deserving persons/ organisations on the National Social Welfare Day every year, reports UNB.

The approval was given in the weekly meeting of the cabinet held at Bangladesh Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

The award will be distributed among the recipients on January 02 every year marking the National Social Welfare Day, cabinet secretary Md Shafiul Alam said while briefing reporters after the cabinet meeting.

"Mother of Humanity title is meant for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina reflecting the global recognition to her for her humanitarian role and social safety programmes for changing the lot of the downtrodden. But the Prime Minister preferred to name the award as 'Mother of Humanity Award' instead of her name," the cabinet secretary.

Under the policy, the award would be given to individuals/ organisations in five categories every year for their role in the welfare of the poor, marginalised and elderly persons including the oppressed and divorced women, children and physically challenged persons.

"The award will be the same as other national award," the cabinet secretary said adding that every  recipient will get a medal of 25 gram gold of 18K, a 'Mother of Humanity' replica, a cheque for Taka 0.2 million and a certificate.

Two committees will select the recipients. One will be at the district level headed by the deputy commissioners and the other at the central level headed by the most senior cabinet member.

The cabinet also approved a proposal of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Division to declare the 3rd Phase of Info-Govt project as the national priority project.
