CHATTOGRAM, Apr.20: Deputy Minister for Education Barrister Muhibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel has called upon all concerned in his ministry to work sincerely for the development of education sector, as a way to bring out overall uplift of the country.

"We, who are political leaders or activists, usually promise to solve all the problems. But, in most cases, we do not work as per our assurances to the public. So, we have to work properly to ensure development of our education sector and of the country as a whole."

The junior minister was addressing as the chief guest a roundtable discussion on education organised by Bangla daily Azadi on its port city office premises on Saturday morning.

"The education sector has achieved remarkable development during the regime of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. But, still we have a long way to go. So, we have to work sincerely," Mr Nowfel observed.

He said, "After taking a notice of the present condition of education, I'm to say Chattogram is less advanced in the development of this sector than other parts of the country. People of Chattogram think that the district is victim of discrimination in this respect. But, presently, we are trying to remove the discrimination, if there is any, and working for overall development of education in the port city as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has given utmost importance to the uplift of this sector."

"Construction of some important education infrastructures is in progress in Chattogram now. There were less than one percent students in technical education earlier while presently it is 14 percent. We are establishing technical schools in every upazila to create skilled manpower," he added.

Azadi editor MA Malek chaired the discussion while its executive editor Wahed Malek delivered welcome speech.

Among others, Chairman of Chattogram Education Board Prof Shaheda Islam, Director of the Education Department Prof Pradip Chakraborti, Deputy Director Aziz Uddin, Chief Education Officer of Chattogram City Corporation Sumon Barua, District Education Officer Md Jashim Uddin and teacher leaders Abu Taher Chowdhury and Anchal Chowdhury addressed the function.
