Capsicum cultivation broadens horizons of Bhola farmers

BHOLA, Jan 19 (BSS): The cultivation of capsicum, which was once considered an unfamiliar foreign vegetable, has created a new horizon of opportunities for Bhola farmers due to the high price as well as the huge demand.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), growers have expanded the cultivation area of the vegetable, which is being produced abundantly in the sandy char areas, especially Majer Char, and exported the spice vegetable to various countries.
"I have cultivated capsicum on two acres of land, spending Tk 0.4 million (4 lakh)," said Abi Abdullah, a capsicum farmer of Majer Char, adding, "I have already earned Tk 0.3 million by selling the vegetable."
"I am hopeful that I will be able to earn Tk 0.5 million more from the selling of the capsicum," he added.
Farmers said fertile land and favourable weather, apart from huge demand and price, have encouraged most of the farmers to cultivate the pepper plant on their land, much to make them economically benefitted.
A vast land of char has literally turned into 'greenery' due to the cultivation of various types of vegetables.
Alongside capsicum, the land of the char areas is now full of different kinds of vegetables, including cucumber, yardlong bean, snake gourd, bitter gourd, bottle gourd, tomato, sweet gourd, and bean.
People living in different char areas, which were abandoned a few years back, including Majer char, Rajapur, Baripur, Ramdaspur, Char Chatkimara, Char Hossen under Bhola Sadar Upazila, Madanpur Char, Majer Char of Dowlatkhan upazila, Char Latif, Gangapur Char, Char Baret, Char Samir Uddin under Borhanuddin upazila, Kachuakhali Char and Char Shahjalal under Lalmohon upzila, Char Jahiruddin, Char Kalatoli of Manpura, Dhalchar and Badnar Char under Tajumuddin upazila and Kukri-Mukri, Dhalchar and other different chars under Char Fasson are cultivating various types of vegetables on their land.
"Like the previous year, vegetables on a vast tract of land have been cultivated at Madanpur Char this year. Over 200 farmers have cultivated vegetables here", said Helal Uddin, a farmer of Madanpur Char under Dowlatkhan upazila. The farmers are very happy as the yield of vegetables from their field was good, Helal added.
