Hate speech on the net

July 04, 2020 00:00:00

Despite deep passion for writing, people like us who don't have many skills other than writing, researching or teaching, it's been scary to write for the media and sharing on the social media. Everyone can notice a rise in hate speech, malicious comments, and derogatory remarks on the social media and on an unprecedented scale. However, only a few vegetarian topics may offer some relief since readers hardly bother about those issues.

It's a matter of concern that different groups are attacking each other and defaming, expressing malice with slangs and socially unacceptable words. Politician, writers, intellectuals, religious leaders, teachers, journalists - all are personally being attacked, sometimes for no reason.

No human being is infallible but there are social norms for criticism of intellectual works. We can recall such practices were used to attain goals of movement but impact of unacceptable means for pursuing good ideals cannot be good. It backfires in the long run and unacceptable things may be accepted as a social practice by most people quite unaware.

However, I see an exception to such a practice on Wednesday when business tycoon Latifur Rahman died. In death, he was showered with good messages and love and respect of a cross-section of people. We understand it's the result of his decent behaviour and ethical business practice. We can follow his example and show collective responsibility in building a peaceful society. The sad thing is that the number of such people is becoming rare.
