Of post-pandemic mental disorder

July 04, 2020 00:00:00

We've seen a state of denial since the beginning of the Covid-19 outbreak and rather blame-game internationally. Such a situation led to lack of preparations for combatting coronavirus and the authorities could not convey the right message in terms of social distancing, and compliance with laws. Enforcement of simple health protocols helped many countries to address the situation.

It can't be predicted with certainty what consequences of the Covid-19 would be in our lives in course of time. However, we know as mental health activists, this kind of pandemic causes psychological and emotional problems such as acute stress disorder. We will not be able to neglect the toll of the prolonged crisis on mental health since people have to struggle to make a living, secure medicare and see a sustainable future.

At the moment, what is important is people's resilience that may help them to overcome the crisis at hand. We also need to develop proper knowledge of the pandemic and its possible impacts apart from taking stock of the established knowledge. Mental health professionals need to work not only to help overcome the current situation but also to contribute to improving mental health of people after the pandemic.
