Overuse of pesticides concerning

The indiscriminate use of harmful pesticides in Bangladesh's agricultural sector has reached alarming levels due to pressure to maximise yields and fierce market competition. Reports suggest that many farmers, in their bid for rapid and abundant harvests, are applying excessive amounts of pesticides without adhering to proper guidelines. This reckless practice poses severe threats to crops, soil health, water bodies, and public well-being.
The lack of strict regulation and inadequate awareness among farmers have exacerbated the situation. Instead of using pesticides in a controlled and scientific manner, many apply them indiscriminately, often exceeding the recommended limit. Such overuse is reducing soil fertility, contaminating water sources, and introducing toxic residues into the food chain. As a result, both farmers and consumers face serious health risks, while biodiversity suffers due to the decline of beneficial insects and microorganisms essential for natural pest control and pollination.
This situation is deeply concerning for long-term food security and environmental sustainability. The government, agricultural experts, and farmers must collaborate to enforce stricter pesticide regulations, promote awareness, and encourage eco-friendly alternatives. Urgent action is necessary to safeguard natural resources and ensure safe and sustainable food production for future generations.
