NBR makes e-payment mandatory

FE REPORT | March 31, 2023 00:00:00

The government has made electronic payment of income taxes mandatory by scrapping the provision of payment through pay order and manual treasury challan.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) on Thursday issued a statutory regulatory order (SRO) that took effect from 23 March 2023.

The pre-publication gazette has been signed by Income tax member Dr Sams Uddin Ahmed.

However, the revenue board will review the SRO if any objection or recommendation is made on this issue by the next 15 days.

In the SRO, the NBR has replaced provisions in the Income Tax Ordinance-1984 on 'manner' and 'mode' of tax payment by assesses and tax deducted at source.

As per amendments, taxpayers have to pay tax through automated challan (a-challan) or through electronic payment from now on as per specified rules of the NBR.

Officials said the NBR has to issue the SRO just two months before the next budget proposal to meet a condition of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) against $2.0 billion loan.
