Prices here higher among many SA countries

Prices of essentials here prevail on a higher trajectory in Bangladesh than in many other regional countries as steep inflation acts as an inexorable hiker, statistics show.

Information extracted from numbeo.com, a renowned crowed-sourced global database, shows consumer prices in India's capital city, Delhi, 11.2-percent lower than in Dhaka of Bangladesh. This comparison is made in dollar terms.

The groceries' prices in Delhi in particular are 21.4-percent lower than in Dhaka.

To maintain urban living, including house rent, would need around US$1,654.2 in Delhi. The same standard of life in Dhaka costs $1,639.5. The calculation also assumed net earnings, after income tax.

The consumer-price indices in Islamabad in Pakistan are 25.1-percent lower than in Dhaka of Bangladesh.

The data show groceries in Islamabad cheaper 40 per cent than in the Bangladesh capital.

"You would need around $1,331.7 in Islamabad to maintain the same standard of life that you can have with $1,639.5 in Dhaka (assuming rent in both cities)," the portal states.

In Kathmandu of Nepal also consumer prices are lower than in Dhaka, by 2.0 per cent.

Groceries in the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, are 17-percent lower than in Dhaka.

One would need around $1,661.2 in Kathmandu to maintain the same standard of living that one can have with $1,639.5 in Dhaka as the rent rates are nearly 30-percent higher in the Himalayan tourist city of Kathmandu than in Dhaka.

In the meantime, the consumer prices in two economies of South Asia -- Sri Lanka and the Maldives -- remained higher than in Dhaka. Sri Lanka has been passing through economic crisis since 2019 crash.

On the other hand, in Male in the island country most products are imported by the tourist country, the Maldives.

In Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, consumer prices are 37.4-percent higher than in Dhaka. Groceries in Colombo are dearer by 68.5 per cent than in Dhaka

Consumer prices in Male are 84.1- percent higher than in Dhaka.

The scarcity of land, combined with the desire to preserve the natural beauty and environment, limits the number of resorts and accommodations available, which can drive up prices due to high demand and limited supply for long.

Groceries' prices in Male are 55.6-percent higher than in Dhaka.

"You would need around $3,841.2 in Male to maintain the same standard of life that you can have with $1,639.5 in Dhaka (assuming rent in both cities)", the report says.
