A Dhaka court on Sunday issued an arrest warrant against cricketer and former Awami League lawmaker Shakib Al Hasan and three others in a case involving two bounced cheques at IFIC Bank.
Judge Md Ziadur Rahman of the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka, passed the order as the accused, including Shakib, did not comply with an earlier order of the court to appear before it.
On December 18 last year, another Dhaka court summoned them to appear before it on January 19 after hearing a case filed by IFIC Bank's Relationship Officer Shahibur Rahaman.
According to the case statement, the Agro Farm owned by Shakib took loans from the Banani branch of IFIC Bank at various times for business purposes. Against that, the company issued two cheques of Tk 41.45 million. The cheques were dishonoured due to insufficient funds.
Later Shahibur Rahaman filed a case against Shakib Al Hasan and three others.
The bank's spokesperson and also DMD and Chief of Branch Business, Md Rafiqul Islam confirmed the court order to the FE.
Director of Shakib Al Hasan Agro Farm, Emdadul Haq and Malaiker Begum appeared on Sunday complying with the court order, while Shakib and Agro Farm's Managing Director Gazi Shahagir Hossain skipped the appearance.
The court issued arrest warrants against Shakib and Gazi Shahagir Hossain as a result.
Earlier in October, the IFIC Bank issued a legal notice to Shakib Al Hasan Agro Farm Limited, owned by the former captain of the Bangladesh national cricket team, demanding repayment of an outstanding Tk41.45 million loan.
The bank's Banani branch sent the legal notice through a daily newspaper in accordance with the Negotiable Instruments Act.
In the notice, the bank said the company must repay a total of Tk41.45 million within 30 working days of receiving the notice. If the amount is not paid within this timeframe, the bank will take legal action against Shakib's company, added the notice.
