Former Awami League MP HBM Iqbal's wife and children have been sent to jail after they surrendered to a Dhaka court, reports bdnews24.com.

Iqbal's wife Mamtaz Begum, sons Imran Iqbal and Moin Iqbal, and daughter Naurin Iqbal have been convicted of concealing asset information in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

A former lawmaker from Dhaka, Iqbal is the chairman of Premier Bank.

His son Imran is a director of the bank. The other son Moin and daughter Naurin had also served as directors.

During the military-installed caretaker regime in 2007, the ACC prosecuted Iqbal and his family for concealment of assets and acquiring wealth beyond known sources of income.

In March 2008, a Dhaka court found Iqbal, his wife, two sons and daughter guilty. The former MP was given 13 years in prison and fined Tk 5.0 million.

The High Court later acquitted Iqbal of the charges and issued a rule staying the convictions of his wife and children. In November last year, the Appellate Division scrapped the rule and upheld the convictions.

Four months later on Wednesday, they surrendered to the court of Dhaka's First Special Judge Ataur Rahman, which scrapped their bail petitions and sent them to prison, their counsel Pran Nath said.
